It feels a bit like the lead up to the Olympics has been going on FOREVER, but it's finally here! I feel a bit sad that I'm out of the country while they're there, but I'm still routing for team GB all the way from Japan!! And with my current obsession, what better way than with a bento?!
Back Box:
Edamame
Cherry Tomato
Tofu with Sambal Tumis
Union Jack, made out of red pepper and pickled aubergine
Watermelon and marshmallow skewers
Front Box:
Coconut Rice
Olympic Rings, made out of white egg (kind of dyed with pickled eggplant liquid), egg yolk, nori, cucumber and red pepper
The background is the right colours, but looks a little too like a French flag for my liking!
That's better! This box was mine. It's basically the same, but with cucumber rather than edamame, and no flag.
Unfortunately, the bottom bento had a rather sad end. When I opened it for dinner, the watermelon had been crushed, and the juice leaked over everything, mixing with the Sambal sauce as it went. NOT a good combination. I think I need a box with rather more sturdy dividers before I try and mix sweet and savoury in the same box again! I just hope the Olympics end slightly more successfully than my Olympics dinner did!!
Oooh, I love your Olympics bento! Your egg rings are brilliant! Sorry your lunch met a sad end though, taste-wise, but it looked delicious!
ReplyDeleteThanks! John ate his at home and said it was tasty, I'm just sad I didn't get to try mine too. Apparently this just wasn't a bento for a long bus ride!
DeleteHow come I hadn't found this blog before? Lots of delicious and pretty food here - makes me even more excited about coming out to visit ... you have got time to make 4 bento boxes each day, haven't you?
ReplyDeleteBecause you don't love me enough, clearly!
DeleteI've already bought Dad a bento box (it has a sailing theme!) and John is under strict instructions to buy me at least one more box for a birthday present, so I'm planning to have enough to make us all bentos. You might have to help though!
I love the Union Jack you made in the top box, very creative! And marshmallow/watermelon skewers... mmmmm. Sorry to hear it leaked, though. Hope you find a good, leak-proof lunchbox. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I had fun making it anyway, even if I couldn't eat it in the end!
DeleteI think I need to spend more than ¥100 (US$1.30) on a bento box...I've been going for the cheap ones, but perhaps I need to splash out!
Silicon cupcake liners are great for allowing your cold bento tier to have sweet and savoury. As long as you are able to keep the box relatively upright on your commute, you should be fine. Any watermelon juices would stay in the food cup. Love the theme and the execution - nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThanks you! I have a lot of liners, but I'm rubbish at keeping my bag upright. That day I had to get a train, a bus, walk 20mins, then get a taxi and another train before I got a chance to eat, so I think that was asking a bit too much! Perhaps I just need a better bag to put it in, rather than just throwing it in my handbag.
DeleteExcellent job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking this up to Bento of the Week at BBN! The leaking is one of the reasons why my daughter doesn't want bentos anymore. She said her food is 'disgusting' when it's all soggy. Bentos are fewer and further in between this year, but she seems to really enjoy them when I do make them.

This is thankfully the only disaster I've had! I learnt my lesson from this one and am now much more careful if I put sweet and savoury in the same box!
DeleteBeautiful! Love the rings :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
